Whenever I think of summer, ice cream is one of the first things I think of. This dessert is synonymous with a day at the beach, pool parties, movie nights and the perfect after-dinner treat. But even this summer staple can have its downsides. As sweet as ice cream can be, it’s also the messiest to eat in hot weather. Trying to get through a fast melting ice cream cone, dripping on both sides, is stressful. And sticky hands just make the rest of a walk down a boardwalk a little unpleasant.
Enter: mochi ice cream, which remedies all these problems. Mochi, a traditional Japanese food is made from glutinous, short-grain rice that is steamed and repeatedly smashed with traditional hammers to achieve its unique texture. This creates a chewy treat (the ideal shell for your favorite ice cream)!
I've recently tried the brand Sweety, an Asian American-founded company based in California that not only uses the freshest milk to create its creamy ice cream, but it also incorporates a variety of ingredients inspired by traditional Asian flavors that they couldn’t find in most grocery stores growing up. Their mochi ice cream comes in eight delicious flavors, including Matcha Green Tea, Azuki Red Bean, Ube Purple Yam, Vietnamese Coffee, Alphonso Mango, Simply Strawberry, Classic Chocolate and Madagascar Vanilla. No matter which flavors you try, they all come in a cute, satisfying size that you can eat in three-bites or less which saves you from ice cream meltdowns, literally!
Here are more delicious mochi ice cream options to help you cool down for the rest of the summer without the mess:
If vanilla is your usual go-to, you're going to love the sweet and subtle nutty flavor of ube ice cream. Not only is it deliciously sweet, but the pop of purple is so fun and colorful!
If you're a fan of red bean, you're going to want to get your hands on this classic Japanese flavor. It's loaded with anko and chopped red beans for an enjoyable light sweetness.
If you have a black sesame craving, look no further than this mochi version! It's soft and chewy, but the sesame seeds add a slight crunch for a fun texture.
Bursting with flavor, this tropical fruit is wrapped in a doughy mochi skin with a creamy, mango filling.
